Summary of the talk given by Dr. Stephen Brookfield about Creative and Critical Thinking
It does not matter if you
throughout your live in the schooling process you haven’t been a brilliant student.
you are stigmatize as a bad student just because you can’t past a pen and paper
test. Test like these can’t measure what a person really know because a test is
just a kind of tool that can be a double edged sword because it does not
measure abilities and skills in student. we as learners can have good or bad
experiences when we are taking a test. For example, sometimes students get struggle
taking a test also a test can be a kind of barriers for a learner. I was what happened
to Dr. Stephen Brookfield when he was in the schooling process. So, he looked
for ways for understanding the world and the method in the learning and teaching
process. And analyzing this the whole dimension here comes the importance of Creative &
Critical Thinking and how it works.
Critical thinking is the process by which we became aware of the assumptions that frames the ways we think. We think about scholarship and knowledge and the abstract things that we learn in college. But also, critical thinking frame he way we act. Creative thinking is the ability to look at things from a multiple viewpoints and have multiple responses to familiar ideas and practices. The way we think in most of the times is framed by assumptions. the assumptions are an unexamined belief of what we think without realizing we think it. Our inferences are often based on assumptions that we haven't thought about critically.
According to the Dr Stephen the assumptions that frame our thinking are: Causal, Prescriptive and Paradigmatic. When we talk about critical thinking we talk not only about strategies and methods for doing it. when we talk about key intellectual traditions that help us to understand pretty much what critical and creative thinking means. The key intellectual traditions that Dr. Stephen Brookfield mentioned are: Analytic philosophy which is the strongest key tradition in education is USA, Natural science. Critical theory and pragmatism. Each one of the intellectual keys are really important in the educational field but also, for the life a critical thinker is a person who is able to use these key elements and is able to construct and the deconstruct arguments and I alert to ideological manipulation when they are being brainwashed with dominant ideology.
