CRITICAL PEDAGOGY THE CRUCIAL TOOL FOR EMPOWER STUDENTS TO CHANGE THE WORLD

The Colombian educational model was designed to educate people with values and principles this sounds really interesting isn’t it? What’s more, since we are kids we are told that we go to schools and universities to acquire knowledge that this is something very important for life. But it is not totally truth because due to the fact that, we live in a globalized world, which has been modified over the years in different areas according to the particular interests of capitalism and the work marked. As Marx portrait cited by peter McLaren “schooling simply reproduce class relations and passively indoctrinate students into becoming capitalist”.
As a result of this schools and universities have begun to train individuals to become competitive in the working marked and not political subjects who seek to challenge and over throw the oppressive class from the power. That is why I am sure that critical pedagogy is the way to put an end to the indoctrination in which we have growth.
To begging with this matter, in the classroom students sometimes feel oppressed by some teachers and the curricular tasks that they have to carry out. Teachers are seen as the person who have the truth and knowledge and the authority in the class. Students just have to listen and take notes. What’s more they have to memorize and regurgitate information without have the chance to give their ideas or opinions. In order to put an end to this matter, future teacher will have to promote democracy in his/her classes. Doing this teacher will start to change the society because having a democratic class means empower students to express their ideas and opinions. Also the students and the teacher can construct knowledge.
I cannot believe my eyes that here in Colombia we have some part of the population whose were indoctrinate really well to the extent that they feel proud and happy because they support certain political party in which all people that integrate that party has power and privileges. Sadly, this people feel delighted for this further more they don’t accept that other people negative comments related to the party. If they heard something bad related to the party immediately get mad and argue with the person or take what was said as a fallacy. For me it is something really crazy taking into account the social status of the majority of the people that supports this party.
Since we are kids we have been told by our parents and some teachers, that in the world the truth has been told also, that there is not point put a doubt over the truth. In addition to this, we have got the media also, promote this idea. As peter McLaren says “knowledge is a social construction is the product of an agreement between individuals who live out particular social relations (p.63) But here in Colombia all of this goes on the other way around. As a result of this, we have got citizens that are not able to see what is behind or beyond of an issue.
We have been filled in schools and universities with productive knowledge. This is the kind of knowledge that make us machines in this globalize world. But what would happen if we as teachers teach our students practical knowledge or as Habermas calls it emancipatory knowledge. helps people to understand how social relations are distorted and manipulated by relations of power and privilege. It will help us to create the conditions under which irrationally domination and oppression can be overcome and transformed through deliberative and collective action.
To conclude this, despite of the fact here in Colombia we have been immersed in an indoctrinate, which have done too much prejudice to people. So far nothing has been done to abolish this issue. It is a kind of legacy that have been transmitted for generations. In addition to this, the educational field has an enormous influence of politics that have oppress the development of the education in Colombia. The contents that are taught in the schools are the ones that people who have the power want to be taught. But if we as teachers teach our students using critical pedagogy we empower students to change the world. Because teachers have a significant role to emancipate students to have the need to think critically, dialogue about social issues or relevant topics that are in their surrounding
